Kaushik Ganguly's Bengali family drama 'Aajo Ardhangini' continues to face an uphill battle at the domestic box office as it enters its third week of release. On its fourteenth day of release (Day 14, Thursday), the film collected an estimated gross total of approximately ₹0.17 crore in India, showing minimal growth and failing to gain any significant momentum.
With this consistent but underwhelming performance, 'Aajo Ardhangini' has pushed its total India gross collection to approximately ₹1.70 crore, while the worldwide gross collection stands at approximately ₹1.70 crore. The film's disappointing run has confirmed that the sequel to the critically acclaimed 'Ardhangini' will finish its theatrical run as a commercial disappointment, recovering only a fraction of its reported ₹4 crore production budget.
A Disappointing Theatrical Run
Directed by Kaushik Ganguly and produced by Surinder Singh and Nispal Singh under the Surinder Films banner, 'Aajo Ardhangini' features an ensemble cast led by Churni Ganguly as Shubhra, Jaya Ahsan as Meghna Mustafi, and Kaushik Sen as Suman Chatterjee. The film also stars Ambarish Bhattacharya, Lily Chakraborty, and Indrashish Roy in supporting roles. The technical team includes cinematographer Gopi Bhagat, editors Subhajit Singha and Ramess M.B, and music composed by Anupam Roy.
The film's day-wise trajectory has been disappointing from the start. After a weak opening day of ₹0.14 crore gross on July 10, the film showed some growth with ₹0.30 crore on Day 2 and ₹0.52 crore on Day 3. However, the first Monday witnessed a sharp drop to ₹0.17 crore, followed by ₹0.20 crore on Day 5, ₹0.19 crore on Day 6, and ₹0.18 crore on Day 7. The Day 14 collection of ₹0.17 crore is a significant drop from its second weekend numbers, indicating a lack of sustained audience interest. With the film's total gross collection remaining below ₹2 crore, it has failed to attract the audience that made the original 'Ardhangini' a success.
Strong Performances Despite Box Office Failure
Despite its commercial failure, 'Aajo Ardhangini' has received positive critical reviews, particularly for the performances of its lead cast. Churni Ganguly's portrayal of Shubhra has been widely praised, with critics noting her remarkable restraint in depicting a woman who has endured disappointment yet refuses to become bitter. Jaya Ahsan's performance as Meghna has also been commended for bringing vulnerability to a character caught between guilt, love, and uncertainty, while Kaushik Sen continues to excel as the insecure, emotionally damaged Suman.
The film's storyline, which picks up some time after the events of 'Ardhangini', explores the continuing emotional baggage carried by the three central characters. Meghna shows signs of pregnancy, which upsets Suman as he suspects her of having an affair, leading to a clash of egos and Meghna leaving Suman's home. A new health emergency takes her back to Subhra for advice and guidance, revisiting the complex dynamics established in the first film.
Kaushik Ganguly's direction and Anupam Roy's music, including the much-anticipated songs 'Koto dure dure' and the female version of 'Shorir bhalo nei' sung by Lagnajita Chakraborty, have been appreciated. However, despite these strengths, the film's theatrical performance has failed to deliver. With the film's lifetime collection expected to remain below ₹2 crore, 'Aajo Ardhangini' will conclude its theatrical run as one of the major box office disappointments of the year for Bengali cinema.
