Anupam Kher and Neena Gupta's crime thriller 'The India Story' has failed to make any impact at the domestic box office, continuing its disastrous run. On its fourth day of release (Day 4, Monday), the film's collections remained negligible, confirming its status as one of the biggest box office disasters of the year.
According to industry reports, the combined collections of 'The India Story' and two other Hindi releases of the week did not even touch ₹1 crore over the opening weekend. The film's opening was described as "weak everywhere," with poor publicity contributing to its dismal performance.
Disastrous Opening Weekend
Directed by Mikhil Musale and produced by Gautam S. Shah, 'The India Story' was released on July 24, 2026, alongside 'Dulhaniya Le Aaeegi' and 'Tera Yaar Hoon Main'. All three films have been declared box office disasters, with even their combined collections failing to reach the ₹1 crore mark.
The film features an ensemble cast including Anupam Kher, Neena Gupta, Raghav Juyal, Pallavi Sharda, Abhimanyu Singh, Zakir Hussain, Riva Arora, Kurush Deboo, and Kashyap Shangari. The technical team includes music by Ankur Tewari and background score by Sanket Sane.
A Weak Theatrical Performance
Despite a promising premise that explored the dark underbelly of India's media landscape, the film's storyline failed to connect with audiences. The film received mixed-to-negative reviews, with critics noting that while the intention was strong, the execution fell short.
While Anupam Kher and Neena Gupta received some praise for their performances, the film's publicity and opening were described as "poor," with collections remaining weak across all territories. The film's subject matter, which revolved around uncovering a major conspiracy in the media world, failed to resonate with the target audience.
With the film's lifetime collection expected to remain negligible, 'The India Story' will conclude its theatrical run as one of the most significant box office disasters of the year, failing to recover even a fraction of its production and marketing costs.
