The Odyssey Box Office Day 3: Christopher Nolan's Epic Crosses Rs 70 Crore in India, Registers Biggest Opening Weekend of His Career

The Odyssey is unstoppable at the box office. Christopher Nolan's epic fantasy adventure has collected an estimated Rs 21.90 crore net on its third day (Sunday) across 9,195 shows in India, taking its total India net collection to an impressive Rs 61.30 crore and its gross collection past the Rs 70 crore milestone to Rs 73.19 crore.

The Day 3 collection saw only a marginal 0.5% dip from Saturday's Rs 22 crore net, indicating exceptional word-of-mouth and repeat viewings. The film's opening weekend total of Rs 61.30 crore net has made it Christopher Nolan's biggest opener in India, surpassing the lifetime net collection of several of his previous films including Inception, The Dark Knight Rises, and Interstellar.

A Record-Breaking Start for Nolan in India

Headlined by Matt Damon as King Odysseus, the film began its theatrical journey with a strong Rs 17.40 crore net on Friday, witnessed solid growth on Saturday with Rs 22 crore net, and maintained momentum on Sunday. The film had already made history on its opening day by becoming Nolan's highest-opening title in India, with a Day 1 gross comfortably surpassing the launch of Oppenheimer.

The original English-language version has been the biggest contributor to the India business, earning an estimated Rs 48.5 crore so far. The Hindi dubbed version follows next, while the Tamil and Telugu versions have also contributed significantly to the overall collections.

Nolan's Vision Brings Homer's Epic to Life

Written and directed by Christopher Nolan, The Odyssey is an adaptation of Homer's ancient Greek epic poem that follows Odysseus' perilous journey home to Ithaca after the Trojan War. The film features a star-studded ensemble cast with Tom Holland as Telemachus, Odysseus's son, and Anne Hathaway as Queen Penelope, his wife. The cast also includes Zendaya as the goddess Athena, Robert Pattinson as the antagonist Antinous, Charlize Theron as Calypso, Lupita Nyong'o in a dual role as Helen of Troy and Clytemnestra, along with Jon Bernthal, John Leguizamo, Himesh Patel, and Mia Goth.

Emma Thomas and Christopher Nolan produced the film through their Syncopy banner, with Ludwig Göransson composing the powerful score and Hoyte van Hoytema handling cinematography. The film was shot entirely on IMAX 70mm film, making it the first feature to achieve this milestone.

Global Triumph and Future Prospects

Globally, The Odyssey has already recovered its estimated $250 million budget within three days of release, grossing over $264 million worldwide during its opening weekend. This marks Christopher Nolan's biggest worldwide opening since 2012's The Dark Knight Rises. The film opened across 73 international markets with the United Kingdom and Ireland leading with $17.4 million, followed by France with $13.7 million and Italy recording the biggest July opening at $11.5 million.

Trade analysts are now projecting that the film could cross the Rs 100 crore net mark in India by the end of its second week, provided it maintains its current momentum through the weekdays. With critical acclaim pouring in and no major releases until the end of the month, Nolan's mythological epic is poised to continue its dominance at the box office worldwide.
